Cartografía sonora de Gijón (2010)
Web Installation
Following Michel de Certeau, the everyday city is a text written by those who cross through it in their everyday journeys, “making use of a space which cannot be seen”. Eschewing the model of an exclusively visual, panoptic and geometric city-panorama mapped out by urban planners and cartographers, the need arises to create new sentient itineraries which can question the concept of the city as an abstract, univocal space.
In this regard, escoitar.org wishes to draw a Sound Cartography of Gijón, through four strategies to better capture the city’s acoustic personality:
1. Creation of an interactive sound map that is accessible via the web, which will allow members of the community to add those urban sounds that they identify with. As they are registered under a Creative Commons licence, the sounds can be downloaded for creative uses.
2. A sound workshop lasting five days conceived to explore the world of sound and art while making recordings in the city to be added to the interactive sound map.
3. A sound map of Gijón: as part of the workshop, recordings will be made of the city’s most representative acoustic spaces which will also be geolocated on the interactive sound map.
4. With the soundscapes of the city of Gijón, the members of Escoitar.org and other invited sound artists will give a live performance together
