The European Digital Art and Science Network launches its first call for an artistic residency

The European Digital Art and Science Network, joined by LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial and seven European artistic and cultural institutions, with Ars Electronica as leader, has launched it first international call for an artistic residency.
This Europe-wide initiative offers artists the chance to spend several weeks at the ESO–European Southern Observatory followed by a stay at the Ars Electronica Futurelab. The recipient of this unique opportunity will be decided by a competition being staged right now throughout the world.
The European Digital Art and Science Network aimed at fostering the collaboration between artists and scientists under the principles of interdisciplinarity, European intercultural exchange and the development of new audiences. This project is joined by one scientific institution, ESO (European Southern Observatory) from Chile, and eight European cultural institutions, which are, in addition to LABoral and Ars Electronica Linz, the Center for the Promotion of Science (Serbia), the DIG Gallery (Slovakia), the Zaragoza City of Knowledge Foundation (Spain), Zavod K6/4 (Slovenia), GV Art (England) and the Science Gallery (Ireland). Half the financing of the European Digital Art and Science Network is being provided by the European Union; the other 50% is contributed on an equal basis by the participating institutions.
This new network is debuting with a competition aimed at artists all over the world. Beginning immediately, aspirants can submit a short video elaborating on a project idea they would like to develop and implement in the context of stays at the ESO and the Ars Electronica Futurelab. A jury made up of representatives of all network members will convene February 23-25 to select two artists to participate in the Residency program. Mentors will accompany and support the two winners at both the ESO and the Ars Electronica Futurelab. Part 1 of the Residency will serve as a source of inspiration; the second part is designed for implementation of the artistic project.

The European Digital Art and Science Network aims to link up scientific aspects and ideas with approaches used in digital art. Fostering interdisciplinary work and intercultural exchange as well as gaining access to new target audiences are among its declared goals. There is also strong emphasis on art’s role as a catalyst in processes of social renewal. By creating images and narratives dealing with the potential risks and rewards inherent in technological and scientific development, artists exert an important influence on how our society comes to terms with these innovations.
The results of the residencies will premiere at the Ars Electronica Festival September 3-7, 2015 in Linz. Then, a modularly constructed travelling exhibition will make the rounds of all seven cultural partner institutions. This exhibition will be accompanied by workshops and discursive formats such as conferences and symposia.
