A palimpsest of voices and faces is one way of introducing the characters, experiences and legends which played a major role in the rise of mining during the early decades of the 20th century. Paradoxically, the society which witnessed the boom in industry and the introduction of new technologies saw very little of the promises of modernity. Subsistence economy and everyday life continued to prevail over still remote concepts such as welfare, health or culture.
However, these are the people who, with their efforts, shaped the modern society that currently defines the Cuencas and, by extension, the rest of the region. Furthermore, their stance towards what they lived through was incredibly contemporary. In accepting the demands imposed by the natural environment, they remained connected to the rural context, while contributing with their efforts to the demands of the industrial, and at once witnessing the forward thrust of the urban. The development of the Cuencas of Asturias necessarily responds to the uncertainty and instability of the environment in which its inhabitants lived out their lives.
