Sound memory
The surface area of this modified territory is so large and the number of artefacts so many, that the origins of its existence can be traced back even further than the changes taking place in recent decades. The confrontation of the different landscapes on the surface is in one way a mirror image of what has been lying underground for thousands of years. The layout of subterranean coal deposits is shaped by folds, fractures, slippages and an extremely complex geometry. The overground architectures could have emerged as an inverted reflection of this concealed landscape, a place that only insinuates its powerful influence in the uneven confrontation between man and deep-lying strata. The projection of a large part of the catalogued artefacts is accompanied by NiFe, a symphonic composition whose name refers to the nickel and iron at the earth’s core. The work was composed as a tribute to the 33 victims of mining accidents in 1995, one of the most tragic years in the mining history of Asturias. This 13-minute piece intensively evokes the emotion, anxiety and drama unleashed when the centre of the earth turns on its dwellers.
