Sleeping Machine I, 2009
Hiraki Sawa (Japan, 1977). Single video. Ed. 2/8. 7’07’’
Sleeping Machine I and II feature old calculating machines and the inner workings of clocks in motion against night-time urban scenes. Apart from evoking a seductive sense of nostalgia, the images are metaphors of Sawa’s most personal inner space, like the very act of sleeping or of remembering. The artist is not interested in landscape or the everyday as such, but as a backdrop to his own memory.
