Universo vídeo. La Magia de las Imágenes
A selection of works from the collection Jean-Conrad and Isabelle Lemaître
Since the beginning of time, the image has been associated with magic. Long before the notions of art or the artistic were invented, the wall paintings that still daub caves like Altamira and Chauvet amounted to a pre-scientific endeavour to grasp the unknown, a form of mediation with ritual pigments, a liturgy between early man and his surrounding environs.
Nowadays scientific thought is concerned with finding meaning in the behaviour of the cosmos, and to this end it transforms knowledge into images. Ranging from the infographics that show us the behaviour of atoms and X-rays, not forgetting photos of the universe taken from telescopes and the global flow of data, one comes away with the feeling that there is no access to knowledge if it is not through visualisation.
This selection of videos from the Lemaître Collection rethinks the role of the image in the construction of our relationship with reality, through a reflection on the very medium itself, in other words, its logic and the technology it articulates in its social dimension. Caught between illusion and the objective and mechanical recording of space and time, these twelve video pieces construct a constellation of approaches to the central role of images in our everyday life.
