Sobre el terreno (From the ground up)
Sample of different projects in Spain of Gehry through 11 models, photographs, videos and 30 personal sketches of their work
Last May the jury of the Príncipe de Asturias Prize for Arts awarded this prize to the American architect Frank O. Gehry “based on the relevance and impact of his creations in many countries, that have defined and developed architecture over that last 50 years”.
Gehry expressed his satisfaction and stated that he felt “deeply honoured to receive this prestigious award. Spain occupies an important position in my heart and in my personal life. Eventhough I am from Canada and live in the U.S., I always feel at home in Spain. I am fully satisfied to be part of the legacy of these awards”.
From the ground up showcases in the Project Hall of LABoral the works executed by Frank O. Gehry in Spain, focusing in three of his most emblematic works: The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (1997); the Marqués de Riscal wineries in Elciego, Álava, (2006); and the sculpture Pez (1992) in the Olympic Village of Barcelona. The exhibition includes models, pictures, videos as well as 30 sketches by the architect.
An example of Gehry’s “open, playful and organic” architecture which has been awarded by the Fundación Príncipe de Asturias is the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao that, “in addition to its architectural and aesthetic excellence, has had a huge economic economic, social and urbanistic impact in its environment”, as indicated by the jury that awarded the Prize.
From the gorund up pays tribute to the architect and is part of the cultural activities programmed by the Fundación on the occasion of the awarding ceremony of the Prizes in 2014. It also shows the public the genesis of Bilbao’s Guggenheim, the sculpture of the Olympic Village, a 30 metre gigantic fish in the gardens of Hotel Arts in Barcelona, and the Herederos del Marqués de Riscal wineries in Elciego (Álava), which occupy a 100.000 m² surface devoted to the production, storage and exclusive research of wine and include a luxury hotel in the main building.
