Sam Kronick. The Slow Internet Cafe
The Slow Internet Cafe, by Sam Kronick, is the winner project of the call Next Things 2014, jointly made by LABoral and Telefónica I+D
Sam Kronick, Director of The Consortium for Slower Internet invites you to connect at the Slow Internet Cafe— a space to contemplate what happens to our information as it travels from device to device across a global network of unthinkable proportions.
While we may like to imagine that everything between two people communicating online simply fades away into the efficient hum of the web, recent news makes it clear that our data is in fact subject to continuous manipulation by governments and massive corporations.
At The Slow Internet Cafe, visitors are free to choose from one of several open WiFi networks. Each network augments, filters, or contorts the traffic that flows through it in a different way. There is nothing neutral about the algorithms which define the information processing equipment that separates me and you; the WiFi at The Slow Internet Cafe amplifies these political and social conflicts such that we might begin to imagine which other networked worlds are possible.
