The Valey Cultural Centre in Castrillón inaugurates its new exhibition space with Rastros e indicios [Traces and Clues], a selection of works exploring the legacy of the Industrial Revolution in Spain, with a specific focus on Asturias. Conscious of the need to acknowledge the emplacement of the new space in a territory with a rich legacy which remains vital to most of its inhabitants today, the exhibition also addresses the pressing issue of memory and its transmission in a world increasingly verging on the disembodied and virtual. The works of the artists taking part in the show, whether photographs, video pieces or sculpture installations, offer a new perspective on the importance of the supports of tangible memory. And as globalisation tends more and more to erase cultural specificity, the artists also posit a stimulating reflection on memory as a definer of identity. Here, the very process of creating art, often thought to produce inert art objects, is somehow turned into a vehicle inviting visitors to rethink the value of art objects and images while at once examining how they affect our understanding of reality.

Each one of the four exhibiting artists —all at the early stages of a promising career—
have expressed a keen interest in the notion of memory, archaeology, the cultural value of industrial sites, and the importance of traces and clues in their work.
