Set up to provide support to young artists born or based in Asturias, the LABjoven_Los Bragales programme responds to an initiative by Jaime Sordo, the businessman and collector from Cantabria behind the Los Bragales Collection. Over ten artists from the region have already benefitted from a production residency which led to the creation of ambitious projects later shown at LABoral Centro de Arte.

As could not be otherwise, this year’s award was also affected by the pandemic that marked 2020. Instead of the usual one award, on this occasion two awards were granted to projects that could be potentially exhibited on the Internet.
The results can be seen physically in this exhibition and also in a virtual show accessible on https://virtual.laboralcentrodearte.net/.
The two projects pose reflections that are not removed from all the changes that have taken place in recent months, offering critical insights that will help us to rethink the present and the future of our contemporary world.

Horos kyklos = límite de la rueda, 2020

Horos kyklos = límite de la rueda is an audiovisual installation including a video, photographs and text, which is rooted in reflections opened up by the artist Hito Steyerl in her article “In Free Fall: A Thought Experiment on Vertical Perspective” (2011). Steyerl connects the evolution of the prevailing representation of perspective with several historical moments, arguing that we are living in a context of free fall.

The installation endeavours to question the meaning of ‘horizon’ as a notion entirely linked to a capitalist, colonial, patriarchal, racist and violent system.

Off Love, 2020
In recent times, online dating apps have become the most effective response to social distancing measures, with both the offer and the demand of users increasing considerably.
And it is precisely this context that has given rise to Off Love, a study of the meaning of the connections emanating from and through the Internet. The goal of the project is to incite a reflection on the standardised reiterative model proposed by the digital market, where emotions are exposed to public manipulation, thus limiting and fragmenting our ability for emotional closeness.
