Eco-visionaries presents twelve national and international artistic positions that explore the new connections between the biosphere and the technosphere, the latter marked by the imperative presence of the human being on a planet of limited resources.

It is precisely these relationships that the exhibition debates, through a selection of aesthetic and conceptual approaches, utopian narratives and counter-models ecosystemic to share with a wide audience, also through an educational program and mediation over five months.

The exhibition is an international project, organised jointly by the Bildmuseet of Umeå (Sweden), House of Electronic Arts (HeK) of Basel (Switzerland), MAAT- Museum of Art and Architecture of Lisbon (Portugal) and LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial of Gijón. Conceived as a work in progress, this project has also been joined by new contributions from Matadero Madrid and the Royal Academy of Arts in London (England) to echo the new environmental challenges tackled by the most transversal contemporary artistic practices.

The uniqueness of the project lies in the fact that, over a period of two years, each of the participating entities has created an exhibition that deals with the links between contemporary art and current environmental challenges, from different approaches, directly related to the lines of work of the institution.

Bildmuseet raised this issue from a historical review of the connection between art and ecology. MAAT focused the exhibition on the transdisciplinary relationship between art, design and sustainable architecture, and HeK explored the links between art, ecology and technology.

In this last phase, LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial will explore the emerging connections between the biosphere and the technosphere from different perspectives, taking into account transdisciplinary works that swing between art, science, technology and society. At the same time, the Eco-visionaries exhibition at Matadero Madrid (13.06.-06.10.2019) is being expanded with a research and development programme promoted by the Mutant Institute for Environmental Narratives (IMNA).

The results of the different exhibitions around the Eco-visionaries are shown in a catalogue published in English by the Hatje Cantz publishing house which, in addition to the essays by the curators, has contributions from experts in various disciplines such as Linda Weintraub, Amale Andraos, Matthew Fuller and T.J. Demos. (www.hatjecantz.de).
