'200 metros' is the winning Project of the Production Grant Ciencias del Mar, called jointly by the Port Authority of Gijon and LABoral and is addressed to Asturian artists working in the field of science or technology in relation with the sea and the ocean

200 metros is an immersive installation that displays data gathered with an underwater device in the area of Cañón de Avilés, a submarine canyon located around seven miles off the coast of Asturias, between Colunga and Navia, reaching a depth of 4,600 metres.e area is one of the ecosystems in the Cantabrian Sea with the greatest diversity.
The project explores the manifold changes taking place at a depth of 200 metres, on the limit between the sea and the deep sea, when light disappears. Though lesser known than the surface of the Moon, this place of change and of contact between two worlds provides a multiplicity of narratives and physical, emotional and philosophical contexts.
This work is the outcome of Andy Gracie’s residency at LABoral. During the first phase of his project, the artist designed and manufactured a hybrid underwater machine with built-in sonar, camera and hydrophone. The capsule combines off-the-shelf components with other DIY elements designed specifically for the project at LABoral Production Centre. He later embarked on a three-day expedition to Cañón de Avilés on board the Ramón Margalef, a modern Spanish oceanographic research ship. From there, the submarine prototype submerged to a depth of 200 metres to gather information and make sound and visual recordings of the surroundings. Meanwhile, a floating raft, also built by Gracie, mapped the seabed. Once the information was compiled, Gracie focused on the artistic visualisation of the data in an endeavour to reveal what the sea hides at a depth of 200 metres.
The exhibition is the result of this working process, in which Gracie incorporates into the artwork the scientific and technological information that made it possible.
