Since her 2007 launch in Japan, Hatsune Miku (whose name means “first sound of the future”) has become the ultimate pop star, developed from a vocal synthesizer product into a globally adored and collaboratively constructed cyber celebrity with a growing user community, countless stadium performances as a virtual 3D projection and more than 100 000 songs released worldwide.
During the course of two days, participants will engage in producing original dance movements, vocals and lyrics for the teal-haired, forever-sixteen virtual pop star, ending up with a finished piece that can be uploaded to Youtube or Niconicodouga (Japanese version), adding to the vast collection of fan-generated catalogue of existing songs.
Using the fan-generated freeware such as MikuMikuDance and choosing from a variety of different models and outfits available to download online, participants will be able to create original dance movements, map them onto the chosen model and create backdrops and staging.
Parallel to this, vocal lines will be developed and mapped onto the Vocaloid software, and lyrics added so that the virtual pop star sings. The two elements of singing and movement will be synced at the end, and the finished work will be presented in the venue using a hologram screen amongst others. Maika, Bruno and Clara are the Spanish voices for the vocoder software.
Aimed to: 10 young people from Mar de Niebla Association and Siloé Foundation.
Designed by: Mari Matsutoya, artist, in collaboration witth Martin Sulzer, artist and developer. They will lead an introductory workshop about technology and the software used for the creation of Miku
Timetable: Saturday, from 15 to 6.30 p.m.; Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In addition, a presentation on Still Be Here, a hybrid performance and video essay conceived collaboratively by 5 artists (LaTurbo Avedon, Laurel Halo, Darren Johnston, Mari Matsutoya and Martin Sulzer) for CTM/transmediale in Berlin and the Barbican in London, will take place on the Saturday afternoon. The concepts and production processes underlying the piece as well as the backdrop of the Japanese digitopian fan-culture unique to this movement will be presented.
