The artists Clara Boj and Diego Díaz will work closely with a scientist, Beatriz Remeseiro, who will collaborate with them in the development of the workshop’s different phases.

Clara Boj and Diego Díaz have been working together since 2000. Their work critically engages new media technologies.

The scientist is Beatriz Remeseiro is a member of the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning group, a research group of the Computing Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Oviedo, Spain.

The workshop will have a strong connection with the work of Clara Boj and Diego Díaz displayed in the exhibition, Machine Biography and will also have a connecting thread with their previous work Data Biography.

The workshop is aimed to the last two years of secondary education and it will have three sessions. Due to the present situation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the workshop is being design to be developed mainly online.

Clara Boj and Diego Diaz BIO

Clara Boj and Diego Diaz have been working together since 2000. Their work critically engages new media technologies and the notion of public space within the hybrid city. Their main projects propose new devices (conceptual and technological) to reformulate the perception and experience of urban environments. In this direction, they like to bring their work directly to the street and provoke encounter between people, physical places and the digital space. In many of their projects, they explore nonlinear narrative using geolocation devices and other locative media resources to create narratives that combine layers of physical and digital information. Recently they are working with Machine Learning techniques in order to analyze how computers can understand and predict our future. Their projects and works have been shown in festivals, museums and art centres with international prestige such as: Singapore Art Museum (Singapore), Kiasma Museum (Helsinki), Daejeon Art Museum (South Korea), Kumu Art Museum (Tallinn) ), ZKM (Karlsruhe), Ars Electronica (Linz), Trasmediale (Berlin), File (Rio de Janeiro), ISEA (San Jose, California), Big Day Out (traveling around Australia), Amber (Istanbul), Exit Festival (traveling through France) and nationally such as: La Laboral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial (Gijón), La Casa Encendida (Madrid), Ars Santa Mónica (Barcelona), Els Baluard (Palma de Mallorca), Bolit La Rambla (Girona), Sonar (Barcelona) among others.They have enjoyed residencies in several art and research institutions such as Hangar in Barcelona, Interface Culture Lab in Linz, Symbiotic System Lab in Kyoto, and the Interaction and Entertainment Research Center in Singapore. Among other distinctions, they have been awarded with Alfons Roig Grant 2006 and Vida 13.2 Art and Artificial Life International Competition. They both combine their research with teaching positions. Currently Clara teaches at Fine Arts degree at Valencia Polytechnic University. Diego is associate professor at Jaume I University where he teaches at the Videogames Design Degree. At present time they are developing, together with a small group of researchers, the project Reset Mar Menor, with the financial support of the Carasso Foundation.

Centre of Artificial Intelligence of the University of Oviedo

Founded in 1986, the Centre of Artificial Intelligence of the University of Oviedo, directed by Professor Antonio Bahamonde, stands out amongst the three investigation, development, and innovation centres pioneers of these characteristics in Spain. Since then, it has carried out first line projects in some of the most advance areas of the Artificial Intelligence.

The investigation team of the actual proposal is part of that centre Machine Learning Group. In the last five years, its members have taken part in five public calls investigation projects from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and also from the National Investigation Agency of the Ministry of Science and Innovation. Its last I+D+I project, approved by the National Plan of Scientific  and Technical Investigation and of Innovation, is about the most advance recommendation systems of artificial intelligence related to catering and tourism.

Also, during this last lustrum, the Machine Learning Group has undertaken another five Artificial Intelligence investigation and development contracts, applied to different sectors of communication, solar energy, cattle raising and the education system.

Beatriz Remeseiro received her B.S. degree (2008) and Ph.D. degree “Cum Laude with International Honors” (2014) in Computer Science from the University of A Coruña (Spain). Her PhD thesis was honored with the “2nd Award to the Best PhD Thesis 2014” from the Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence (AEPIA), and with the “Gradiant Award to the best PhD Thesis applied to ICT 2016” from the Galician Official College and Association of Telecommunications Engineering (COETG-AETG). After two postdoctoral fellowships from 2015 to 2017, at the INESC TEC - Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (Portugal) and the University of Barcelona (Spain), she is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Oviedo (Spain). She has co-authored 10 book chapters, and more than 50 research papers in international journals and conferences. She co-organized several special sessions at different international conferences, and served in program and scientific committees. She is currently an Associate Editor of The Visual Computer Journal (Springer). Her main research interests include computer vision and machine learning, mainly applied to real-world problems in areas such as medicine or industry. Her commitment to promote scientific-technological vocations among girls has led her to give talks on scientific dissemination in educational centers, and to launch the Asturias node of the Inspira STEAM project, which is currently coordinated by her.
