Activities programme around art and science in context of the European Digital Art and Science (EDASN)

Materia prima conists on a community laboratory that combines art, science and technology with the purpose of creating a space where artistic production and scientific research can come together, providing the public with the necessary keys and tools for reflection, experimentation and the critical and creative use of technology.
The primary goal behind the art projects on display and the programme of events is for the public to experiment with processes connecting art and science on three levels:
- Practical workshops on scientific tools and approaches based on the DIY and open code philosophy
- Critical and outreach activities based on the artistic projects in the exhibition
- A space, open to the general public in the form of a laboratory where people can experiment with machinery and research
We will work on a number of key areas:
- Digital technologies, social media: design and production of DIY tools in science
- Life sciences, genetic engineering, synthetic biology, neuroscience: people experimenting
- Astronomy and observation of the Earth
EDASN is a network consisting of two scientific mentoring institutions (CERN and ESO), the Ars Electronica Futurelab and seven European cultural partners (Center for the promotion of science, RS – DIG Gallery, SK – Zaragoza City of Knowledge Foundation, ES – Kapelica Gallery / Kersnikova, SI – GV Art, UK – Laboral, ES – Science Gallery, IE) representing strong and various European cultural- and artistic positions.

Artists speaking of science
The project is organised within the framework of activities aimed at collectives at risk of social exclusion with the goal of offering an experience with art through different activities and projects.
LABoral’s Mediation Department, in collaboration with an artist participating in the exhibition, will design a workshop targeting specific collectives. This activity will run throughout the duration of the exhibition.
A project will be chosen which encourages a didactic rapprochement with science and a creative focus on digital tools.

Roundtable: Presentation and evaluation of art and science projects
Held to coincide with the opening of the exhibitionMateria prima at LABoral, this roundtable wishes to incite debate on the relationship between processes of artistic creation and scientific research, their connections and what a shared working space could contribute to scientific research.

Roundtable: Astronomy and open code
The idea behind this roundtable is to agree on a set of basic premises for research into and the production of DIY tools for astronomy. To be held within the framework of winterLAB, a meeting on the creative and community use of technology.

Roundtable: Speaking of science
Through the example of filmmaker and broadcaster Guillermo Zuñiga, the idea behind this roundtable is to agree on popular science, and the role of artists and citizens in the construction, testing and dissemination of knowledge.
