Traslaciones: Nueva estación is a project fostered by the Fundación Municipal de Cultura, Educación y Universidad Popular of the City Hall of Gijón and LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial. It is aimed at stablishing a communication channel between Dublin and Gijón. This exchange channel is connected by two residencies at Plataforma 0. Production Centre of LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial.

The Irish artist Rosie O’Reilly and the Asturian Alicia Jiménez will focus on the joint research of the relationships between art and science. The two resulting projects will be subsequently showcased at Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto de Gijón from July 31 to September 7.

Rosie O’Reilly, a visual artist and designer will develop during her residency at LABoral Las Estaciones como formas fluidas, this work, based on the change in the tidal patterns, in topography, temperature and light every season, poses a metaphore of the socio-cultural context where it is being shown to the public.

On the other hand, Alicia Jiménez presents, in Eclíptica terrestre, an introduction to the complexity of the universe. With a set of old household appliances arranged in a certain order, like planets turning around the Sun, the artist reflects upon the active role that these machines play in everyday life, while at the same time she intends to represent how changes of season happen when the Earth turns around the Sun. The artist will develop the interactivity of her installation with the support of the team of Plataforma 0. To this end research has been done in the field of opensource, using free code tools like processing, and movement detection technologies to translate the position of the visitor into a constellation of points that emulates the shape of a galaxy.

From the relationship of certain everyday objects with the order of the universe and its effect on our atmosphere, to the visualisation of invisible phenomena, both works are an attempt to understand reality, while at the same time exploring the limits of representation.
