Mugatxoan 2009

Mugatxoan 09 is an art project organised by Entrecuerpos-Mugatxoan to offer various representative examples of the contemporary arts (performance, visual arts, dance, theatre) and to open up room for research, reflection and the production of new works.

Since the beginning, Arteleku (Donostia-San Sebastián) has lent its solid support to the project and has acted as producer and venue for Mugatxoan. The need to create relationships that would allow the development of demanding cultural projects in singular places for experimentation led to the collaboration in 2001 with Fundaçao de Serralves (Porto). In 2008 the fourth associated co-producer was brought on board with Teatro de la Laboral from Gijón, joining in the idea of the link.

Laboral is presenting twelve of the artist pieces produced over the period spanning 2001 and 2006, chosen through different international open calls made over recent editions, with the idea of re-visiting our recent memory in order to situate ourselves in the present and to think the future that is beginning in Gijón. The programme of activities is rounded off with conferences and meetings.

Entrecuerpos-Mugatxoan is a cultural association active since 1998. The name is borrowed from a Basque Word meaning “on the borderline”, playing with the idea of situating the project in a conceptual territory eschewing any drive towards demarcating a closed space.

Programme
Thursday 18th June
António Júlio. 200 gr.
Time: at 9 pm
Venue: Platform 2. LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial

200 gr. is not a way of saying I. It is a form of exhibiting, but not an accepted one.
200 gr. is a way of saying one. If the only thing that existed on a packaging is the weight, we would know nothing about the nature of its contents. We would have to wait for it to be revealed. We would long to open the packaging and find out what is inside. And it might turn out that the product inside was another packaging with another weight on it that only encourages us to continue.
200gr. represents a hidden truth, often revealed and often distorted. It is a place of existence.

Thursday 18th June

Amaia Urra. El Eclipse de A.
Time: following 200 gr.
Venue Mediateca. LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial

Waiting is the driving motor behind El Eclipse de A. That, and the desire to dialogue with a film. An event with an end and a beginning. It is not about losing time but more about losing oneself in time, in the time of a film where misencounters are encounters and landings are takings off. It focuses its interest on how time is articulated and transformed within a filmic event, and how this can confront or relate with the everyday and with an event inscribed within a theatrical space and time.

Larraitz Torres. Plastificción
DATE: Sunday 21st June
TIME: At 7 pm
DURATION: 40 min
VENUE: Platform 2. LABoral Art & Industrial Creation Centre

Woman: “In a previous work, I used various series of self-portraits for a theatrical project. It was a very lonely job, I was younger (...)”
(sound of nostalgic music and the image vanishes like in a dream)
Woman (as a young woman): “... ...fiction can come from something apparently functional. And, what do you know! I believe that these parts are no use for going forward, nor for retreating. They are different viewpoints on the same issue...”
Woman, a little later: “Look! It’s here in this book, it says...the indirect style… a discourse that allows free exchange between the author’s voice and the character.”

Sunday 21st June

Loreto Martinez-Troncoso. Finalmente, ¿con o sin título?
Time: following Plastificción
Venue: Sala 1 C. LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial

Starting point:
“I have been speaking for almost 6 years. And almost 2 saying: … 1 year, 4 months and 19 days saying that … 7 months and 21 days saying: … 5 months and 4 days … 2 months and 7…” That’s how I finished Por el momento sin título, exactly 2 years, 4 months and 11 days ago today.

June 17th – 21st Monday 22nd, Tuesday 23rd & Thursday 25th June (not included in Mugatxoan programme)

desde La Laboral
Time: At 7 pm (except June 21st  at 5 pm)
Venue: various spaces at Ciudad de la Cultura, included LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial

“desde” is a site-specific art project with the potential to travel to other sites and places, transforming their original use and turning them into art centres.
Laboral, with a more recent past than its appearance would suggest, contains a strong emotional load perhaps, more than its political origins, because of the fact that its inhabitants were, and are, mainly children and teenagers. La Laboral, a huge place about which everybody has a strong opinion one way or another, is once again going through a period of change.

After one year carrying out interviews with a wide spectrum of people who studied or worked there, “desde . La Laboral” takes the form of an audio-guide, a guided tour in time and space through the voices of students, teachers, artists, politicians, porters, neighbours… A documentary in which the filmed image is not necessary because the spectator has a chance to experience in the present the spaces described in the oral testimony. The discourse revolves around memories and interpretation, and the gaze of the persons interviewed are layered on the gaze of the spectator, in passing creating an imaginary layering of mental spaces.
Desde, from, means time and space: “from then …to now …” or “from here…to there …”.
Thanks to all those we interviewed and especially to Luis Fernández for his invaluable assistance.
